PR Tips For Startups: How To Get And Keep The Media Attention

Same principles work for any content creator trying to stand out in the crowd. Some paraphrasings:

Tip: Launch in the Middle of the Week.

If you’re thinking about online video, you have to consider the huge audience that watches from work. More than half of all videos are watched during U.S. business hours. So don’t launch on weekends, and don’t launch on a Monday (people are preparing for the week) or a Friday (you’ll lose momentum on the weekend).

Tip: Launch Your Show at a Public Forum

Hayden Black announced his new web series Abigail’s X-Rated Teen Diary at the New Media Expo last year. It got him a lot of buzz before episode #1 went up. You should do the same, whether its a conference or a local networking night. Don’t launch at your mom’s birthday party.

Tip: Create a presskit. No complaining. Just suck it up and do it.

Have a presskit ready to go when pitching bloggers and traditional media. They’ll want to refer to it for research, for quotes, for subject matter, and for media (still photos, video clips, etc.). Nothing makes you look more professional than this.
