The Best of Online Video News

January 22nd, 2008 by Robert Gustafson

One of my classes in film school required me to get a subscription to the Daily Variety instead of buying text books. This was before blogs and online editions and the school was in Boston, a wonderful city that (unfortunately for my career choice) was far away from inside entertainment. But in doing so, I was privy to the most current entertainment news available. For me, just being abreast of the daily happenings gave me incredible insight to what was going on in the industry.

With that said, if you are in the Online Video Business, or want to learn more about it, there are a few online daily newsletters that are must reads. Here are the top three:

Media Post offers daily newsletters that feature the days Media and Marketing News. They also include some commentary from industry experts with each e-mail. Today’s newsletter featured one from Jayant Kadambi, the co-founder and CEO of YuMe Networks entitled, “Five Trends To Watch In Online Video Advertising.” Interesting enough to inspire this post, and pretty right on (make sure to read all the way to #5 because that’s where Space Shank hopes to be influential).

Cynopsis
is a daily entertainment e-mail newsletter that also offers an Entertainment Digital Newsletter that highlights all things entertainment and digital.

Although not available as an e-mail newsletter (but available as an RSS feed), the best blog out there in this field is NewTeeVee. They have some of the more insightful writers and industry insiders who filter out the best of the online video stories (Today’s includes a link to a story about how “Online Video Users Hate Pre-Rolls”). They also highlight some of the more interesting video clips from all across the industry. Yet another plus is that they have one of the most interactive blog commenting posted by leaders of the Online Video community. Reading the comments section of a story can be just as intriguing as the story itself.

Signing up for these newsletters and logging on daily to sites like NewTeeVee is essential for anyone interested in the exploding world of online video. Watch the trends, learn who the key players are, interact in the community, but most importantly, use the lessons learned from these resources to create compelling content.
