ICN: All Systems Go!

February 5th, 2008 by Alec McNayr

Our friends at the Westside Eclectic have officially launched their foray into online comedy series.

The Independent Comedy Network is making a play in a crowded field, but I like the direction. Some notes:

  1. Their pre-show bumper (beep beep beep…) is pretty funny. Funny off the start? For every video they produce? Already a big plus.
  2. ICN is launching with five shows, including our friend Alex Enriquez in Annals (see below). Very funny mock history show.
  3. ICN is a very well-designed site built on a ning.com social network. Ning is already working out pretty great for Ask a Ninja, Abigail, and Nowheremen.
  4. Their site clearly separates official series content from UGC fare, which elevates its perceived quality without sacrificing on interactive elements (comments, forums, etc.).

According to NewTeeVee, ICN CEO Marc Campbell is looking to launch a slate of 40 new web series, a claim second only to Brent Weinstein and 60Frames stated goal of 50 shows by the end of 2008.

With talent, funding, and a willingness to experiment, this is all moving in the right direction…
