Flipper Nation Refuses to Die

Flipper Nation lives on, no matter how many times we try to kill it.
I’ve done some Google-sleuthing and found that Flipper Nation is going to be nominated (or at least honorably mentioned) for the 12th Annual Webby Awards.
Further research informs me that 200 videos have been uploaded to Brightcove for the April 8 Webby Award public voting, and in any case, we’re happy to be included among them.
Just the fact that Flipper Nation is still getting accolades is big news for a show with only three episodes under its belt.
It begs the question. After a year off from the web show, why not pick the show back up? It obviously still has resonance in the current state of the world, now that people really are losing their shirts (and homes). The problem, in our mind, is that it’s difficult to make a show about real estate without actually showing house flips. If we were actually flipping houses, that would be easier. But we’re filmmakers, not house flippers.
In the end, we’re interested in pushing ahead with Flipper Nation, but haven’t found the right production partner (read: sponsor). Maybe we should just go for it. We still have a few hundred people still subscribed to the RSS feed, and I still get emails like this to David Kimball’s character email account:
“I do not know how to get my foot in the door with an investor or an individual who would do flips. I surfed the web for the past several days trying to find Info for the contractor, but there is not anything out there. I found your website and and it seems that you’re a well accomplished individual who might have the answers or the guidance to show the right path to take. If you could give me anything to go off of it will be greatly appreciated.”
It’s complicated. The show served its purpose — to put us on the map, allow us to start an official production company (Inc.’d and everything), and land more work. Check, check, and check. Because of Flipper Nation, we landed our ABC deal and two more deals in the works right now.
And with that, I leave it to you. We need to balance our ability to produce on the cheap, but doing our upscale version of good comedy. If the Webby Awards treat us well, into what new format could Flipper Nation be reborn? Green screen snarky real estate news show? David and Richie visit open houses? David and Richie travel the USA looking for hot deals? Anyone?
