The Webby Awards Honor Flipper Nation

Official Honoree, 2008 Webby Awards

Flipper Nation was honored this morning by The Webby Awards as one of 11 honorees in the Online Video: Comedy Short or Episode category.

According to the congratulatory email we received, that means Flipper Nation (Episode 3: The Flippin’ Fight) was among the top 15% of all entries received.

We’re extremely honored and excited to have Flipper Nation named one of the “Best of the Web” alongside videos from both Big Media (ABC, MTV, telemundo/NBC, and Super Deluxe/Turner) and Independent Smaller Media (The Onion, My Damn Channel, Attention Span Media, and College Humor). Just to be in the same category with writer/comedian David Wain is a honor all its own.

Of course, we’re 6% disappointed that we didn’t get a full nomination for an award, but I find it heartening that all five nominees in the Comedy Episode category are backed by a bigger new media network: The Onion, College Humor, and Super Deluxe. It goes to show you that promotion (as part of a network) still matters when it comes to online entertainment. Viral alone doesn’t get you a following (or a Webby, it seems).

[Updated: Hayden Black pointed out that he's nominated for a Webby for Good Night Burbank (in the Video: Comedy Series category), but he's not backed by a new media network of any sort. You are too right. Kudos for that!]

Bringing Flipper Nation Back to Life!

With this award, we are opening up the discussion of bringing Flipper Nation back from the dead.

We are assembling a project plan to bring this satire of the housing bubble back… now that it’s more relevant than ever. We’re creating:

  • A New Series Story Arc
  • A New Web Site (ready for RSS syndication)
  • A Plan for ads/sponsorship (and rate card)
  • A Press Kit

All this in the midst of pre-production for our other two web series (more news coming soon).

We ask you: what advice do you have for us? Is Flipper Nation a viable commodity? Do you have any sponsor connections or ideas? (Yes, we have Home Depot on our list)

    @Rob: you maybe be smaller than ABC or MTV, but you have more Webby Award noms per capita (employees, revenue, years in business, etc.) …and that’s a big deal.

    E! Daily News called the Webby awards the “Oscars of the Web.” Now you are Web-Academy Award winners Richie Tatum and David Kimball. Oh yeah!

    Relevant? Heck yea! With the housing market as it stands at this moment (”Self-correcting”), I think it is quite relevent to bring on the return of flippernation.com! If Howard Schultz can return to Starbucks…flippernation can return to the world of real estate!
