TV Shows Create Community Three Times

June 10th, 2008 by Alec McNayr

I love the new American version of The Office, but as much as it tickles me, it just doesn’t compare with the genius of the British version.

I sat down and watched episodes from season 2 on DVD tonight, and then got caught up in Ricky Gervais’ and Stephen Merchant’s “video diary” (part 1 here on YouTube).

Got me thinking about how creating a show with just ideas and words creates community. First for the writer(s), then for the production (actors, crew, etc.), and then for the audience. It’s quite honorable, and I’m excited to be a part of it.

Sometimes I wonder if Comedy is a noble profession, like Medicine or Law. And then I realize your work is what you make of it. If you make it amazing and caring and meaningful, it will translate across the world.

Or in the case of the Office, Times A Lot More – how many countries are remaking it now?

It’s pretty amazing how an office workspace setting is now a global experience, relatable across cultures. The Awkward Bosses. The Office Romances. Inter-Department Clashes. Universal themes now, somehow.

I look forward to your shows getting picked up by the BBC and India and Brazil and getting redone times a million in those countries. I can help you get the Kenyan version started, if you want. That would be a trip…
