Jimmy Fallon Online: His Spot to Lose?

July 22nd, 2008 by Alec McNayr

Jimmy FallonSNL Alumnus Jimmy Fallon, who is slated to replace Conan O’Brien’s time slot when Conan takes over for Jay Leno next spring, will get his chance to strut his funny stuff earlier than expected, though not on TV.

He’ll get a chance to put his shtick online, as web content. Not full shows, mind you, but just 5-10 minute bits, launched past midnight (when his TV show will eventually appear).

SNL Producer Lorne Michaels explains, “Conan needed time to find his show. I think this will help Jimmy to do that.”

The big question: The Internet (and its snarky audience) is essentially massive, quick tool for judging popularity, likability, and whether or not a person’s comedy “hits.” If Fallon tanks big time in this online iteration, could it cost him his job, even before he takes it?

I think not, but stranger things have happened.
